“The Europeans” by Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004)

With the occasion of “Francophonie 2007” where Cyprus has been an associate member since September 2006, Hellenic Bank will be hosting the world renowned photography exhibition entitled “The Europeans” by Henri Cartier Bresson. Henri Cartier Bresson’s amazing ability to be in the right place at the right time and to capture humanity in all its different aspects has earned him international reputation as “The eyes of the 20th Century”. Today, the Cypriot public is in the privileged position to enjoy, through the World acclaimed photographic exhibition “The Europeans”, unique and in some cases, historic moments of Europe.

“The Europeans” has been exhibited in most of the world’s capitals including London, New York and more recently at the Benaki Museum in Athens. It comes to Cyprus directly from the Henri Cartier Bresson Foundation in Paris in collaboration with Magnum Photographic Co-operative Agents – of which Henri Cartier Bresson was one of the co-founders.

The Exhibition consists of 163 black and white photographs taken in Europe between 1930 - 1970 and focuses on the living conditions of the people before, during and after the Second World War.

The whole event is under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yiorgos Lillikas as well as under the auspices of the French Embassy. This grand project has been made possible with the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture and is dedicated to the memory of the late Minister, Pefkios Georgiades. The contribution of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, The Carrefour Group, Hellenic Bank, Cyprus Airways, the French Cultural Center, Areeba, Bouyges Batiment International Cyprus Branch, Fotodos, The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, Phileleftheros Group, Cyprus Mail, AdBoard, Interticket and the radio Monte Carlo Doualiya, has also been invaluable.

The Exhibition will take place at the Hellenic Bank Head Office in Nicosia from 23rd March – 15th April 2007. It will be inaugurated on the 23rd March by H.E. the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Yiorgos Lillikas.
